The history
of Morocco is long and complex, dating back to the Paleolithic era. The
earliest known human habitation in Morocco is from the Jebel Irhoud site, which
dates back to around 315,000 years ago. In the centuries that followed, Morocco
was home to a variety of cultures, including the Phoenicians, Romans, and
Arabs.
The first
independent Moroccan state was the Berber kingdom of Mauretania, which flourished
in the 3rd century BCE. Mauretania became a client kingdom of the Roman Empire
in 33 BC, and remained under Roman rule for centuries.
In the 7th
century CE, Morocco was conquered by the Arabs, who brought Islam to the
region. The first Muslim dynasty in Morocco was the Idrissid dynasty, which
ruled from 788 to 978. The Idrissids were followed by the Almoravid dynasty,
the Almohad dynasty, and the Marinid dynasty.
In the 16th
century, Morocco was invaded by the Spanish, who ruled parts of the country for
over a century. The Spanish were eventually expelled by the Saadian dynasty,
which ruled from 1554 to 1659.
The
Saadians were followed by the Alaouite dynasty, which rules Morocco to this
day. The Alaouites have been credited with unifying Morocco and modernizing the
country.
In the 20th
century, Morocco was a French protectorate. Morocco regained its independence
in 1956. Since then, Morocco has been a constitutional monarchy.
